Some parking tips that have helped me reduce my chances for dings.
- Whenever possible (like 99% of the time), park in an end spot.
- Never take up more than one parking space. This can backfire, and tick people off, and they may intentionally ding your car.
- If you HAVE to park in a spot with parking spaces on either side of you, park far away. If that's not possible, try not to park next to a 2 door car, or a mini van/SUV or vehicle with car seats in it. So parents leaning over into the back seat to retrieve kids usually have their doors flung wide open, and could care less about someone else’s car doors. If you end up parking in a spot with spaces on either side, or you can get two four door cars on either side of you with no visible car seats, park a little closer to the car whose passenger door is closest to your car. There is a chance the driver was driving solo, and has no passengers. Meaning, no passenger door will be opened.
- Observe if the parking surface is level or at an angle. You want to avoid somebody opening their door and before they can grasp it gravity has swung the door right into your car.
- Parking next to or between cars that are clean and shiny may help as I think to myself that the owners take care of their car and may also be trying to protect their baby as well.
- Park a good distance from trees if you can. Birds “lighten their load” on take off and this deposit could etch into and thru wax, clear coat, paint within a couple of minutes. Carry a micro fiber towel and a small bottle of quick detailer spray in a zip lock baggie in the trunk to remove this mess right away.
