DIY car washing Q & A processes and techniques really short version.
The following is my humble attempt to answer your questions.
A few questions:
1.
What products do you use to wash your car?
I use Optimum NO Rinse Wash & Shine (ONR) after testing many products that are on the market.
2. What is available for us visual learners? Scottwax is a detailer I admire and he makes easy to understand videos.
Scottwax car washing process and techniques for ONR usage. Body: YouTube - Washing a Cayenne with ONR
Scottwax uses ONR and a pump up sprayer. Fenderwells: YouTube - Fenderwell cleaning with Optimum No Rinse Wash
Scottwax uses ONR and Optimum Power Clean. Wheels: YouTube - Optimum No Rinse and wheels part 1
Scottwax uses ONR only. Wheels: YouTube - Optimum No Rinse and wheels part 2
Scottwax claying with ONR Claying: YouTube - Claying with Optimum No Rinse
3. What exactly is the process? What do you use to apply and clean?
One or two bucket method.
One ounce of ONR to one gallon of water.
Grit Guard optional.
I use Lowe’s or Home Depot Pro line grout sponges.
I also use a garden type pump up sprayer first to pre-soak the dirt and debris.
I dry using the absorber soaked in clean rinse bucket others use MF towels, your choice after testing.
You might have to wash area twice or three times to remove all the dirt before drying…depending on how much dirt you have.
Most swirls are applied during the washing & drying process.
Be gentle do not scrub.
4. What else is needed? How many micro-fibers, accessories, etc.?
Using MF towels does not provide the results I want so I use the absorber, others swear by MF towels and some swear at the absorber.
This process is using common sense and very gentle to no pressure when washing and drying.
I use two buckets, two grit guards, one grout sponge for body and separate grout sponge for tires & rims, one absorber again for body and then a separate absorber for the tires & rims.
Couple of gallons of distilled water [no water spots this way] and a couple of ounces of ONR.
5. Can I clay somewhere in this process? After I'd assume?
Clay after wash [no need to dry unless you want to]
ONR can be mixed as your clay lube, read directions on label.
6. Can I seal and/or wax after washing or claying?
Yes you can do both.
After claying I use Poly-Seal followed by Optimum car wax.
Or follow your normal wash & dry with Optimum car wax.
7. How often should I use water-less wash before going and doing the real thing?
ONR is a rinse-less wash not a water-less wash.
In my area of Atlanta we are in a drought and I having been using ONR for four years now as my only wash product on my cars and client cars.
I can finish a car faster with less setup time and cleanup time now then when I was using a hose.
If you are located near me invite yourself over for a coaching session covering how to wash, dry and wax your car. Appointment is necessary.
